Welcome to our March Newsletter!

Sports injuries increase as we gear up for favorite spring activities!

The feet and ankles provide support, balance and stability to your body. Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries that we see. A sudden twist can cause a strain or possible tear of the ligaments surrounding the ankle joint that connects bone to bone. Soccer, football, and basketball players are particularly prone to sprains. Gymnasts, dancers and runners may develop stress fractures in the ankle or foot. A fracture is an actual break in the bone. Everyday people trip, stumble and fall on uneven ground or pavement causing sprains or fractures.

Bruising, swelling and pain can make walking difficult on the injured foot or ankle. If this happens remember the acronym RICE!

*REST-Stay off the affected injury as walking or running can worsen the condition.

*ICE-Ice decreases inflammation. Place ice on/off the affected area repeatedly for 15-20 minutes for the first 48 hours.

*COMPRESSION
-Wrap an ACE bandage around the affected area snugly but not too tight. You don't want to cut off the circulation.

*ELEVATE-Elevate the foot on a couple of pillows. Ideally it should be above the heart to help decrease swelling and inflammation.

If you have difficulty walking, redness, swelling or increased pain it is definitely time to come see us! Here at LFA our experienced and caring Podiatrists are trained specifically to treat your feet and ankles and determine the treatment needed.

We will have you up & running in no time!

SPORTS INJURIES

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Achilles Tendonitis

One of the most common causes

of foot or ankle pain!

Tendinitis can be the result of an injury or overuse of an under-stretched tendon prior to exertion or even improper form during an activity. People with "flat feet" or arthritis are particularly prone to tendinitis. If your pain does not go away with rest & ice within one week, it is time to come see us! It is easier to treat an acute problem than one that becomes chronic!

After a complete exam of your foot and ankle your treatment will focus on relieving pain and preventing further injury. Our doctors may suggest certain exercises or stretches along with custom orthotics.

CUSTOM ORTHOTICS -

A COMMON SOLUTION!

Our custom orthotics help control abnormal foot motion, provide stability, and correct injury-causing imbalances. Orthotics relieve pain caused by heel spurs, plantar fasciitis, bunions, shin splints, tendinits and other conditions. Orthotics are a must for most athletes and helpful for many of the more common foot problems people encounter.

Look for the "DPM"

Feet are complex anatomical structures, all-in-one stabilizers, shock absorbers, and propulsion engines that are instrumental to overall health and well-being. They require expert care. Be sure you are seeing the most qualified health-care professional to treat your feet by looking for the letters"DPM" after his or her name. The DPM means a physician has completed years of rigorous foot and ankle training in podiatric medical school and hospital-based residency training, making him or her uniquely qualified to care for this part of the body.

Doctors of Podiatric Medicine are podiatric physicians and surgeons, also know as Podiatrist, qualified by their education, training, and experience to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and related structures of the leg.
