Per usual, Steve welcomed me warmly and took me to the exam room. Dr. Bertolo was just finishing up with another patient and started a conversation while he worked on my nasty toe fungus. Some of his work (ingrown toe nail) is painful, and he apologizes, but keeps up an engaging, respectful conversation which relaxes me. I left with new comfort and a feeling of being cared for.

I was asked to fill out information in the waiting room. One of the questions asked was my reasons for coming. I stated that my foot was swollen & that I had a small, slightly painful callous on the bottom of my foot.. I never stated that I wanted my toenails trimmed/. The first thing the doctor did was clip my toe nails. I assumed that this was part of the exam, so I didn't say anything. The doctor never mentioned either issue that I had written down. So, I mentioned my shoes as I thought they might have been the cause of the swelling. He said they were fine. I told him that I had broken my foot 5 years ago and perhaps the swelling was caused by arthritis. He said that was very possible and again began discussing shoes as I had told him I was unhappy with the ones I was wearing. Through all this he NEVER examined my left foot. He never even asked me where I had broken it. Again, I brought up the swelling. I said that it was painful when my shoes were tied. His reply was that I could loosen the ties. DAH! I am not a moron. I wanted to know why it was swollen. He was getting ready to end the appointment, when I mentioned the small callous on the bottom of my foot. He would not have taken care of it otherwise. He obviously had not read what I had written. When I got home both my big toes became painful. He had cut the nails too short & had even broken a little of the skin on the right one. I had to use Neosporin on them for several days.
