I have been taking my pets here for about 20 years. I was always happy with Dr. Shand and her prices were reasonable. Today I'm not happy about one thing. I just took my kitten in for a booster shot. When I paid my bill (over $90) I think I was in shock and didn't say anything. When I got home and examined the bill, it was then that I saw I was billed $65 for an exam. I brought my kitten in for a needle, not an exam. I am retired with a very limited fixed income. I don't mind paying for something that was absolutely needed or asked for. My kitten had been examined and first needles given 5 weeks earlier, just before I adopted her. I did not want or expect an exam. I was expecting a bill for about $20 or $25. That being said, maybe I should have expected an exam. Or maybe I should have been told that an exam would be needed for her first visit. I don't know. It's not like I do this everyday. On a positive note, I find the new veterinarians and staff knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. The wait times and prices are reasonable. I will still be bringing her in to be spayed in about 7 weeks.
Thank-you for your response, sorry that this wasn't explained during your time in the clinic. For every animal we give anything to, whether a vaccination, or medication, or surgery we have to examine the pet first by law. We need to have what is called a valid Veterinarian-Client-Patient relationship, which means we have to have taken a medical history and examined the pet within 1 year, and prior to giving any vaccination. So this means, unfortunately, that an exam must be done before any animal is vaccinated anywhere in Ontario (and I think in every other province and state).
